As many conservatives expected, Obamacare has become a gold mine for cronies looking to get their hands on taxpayer funds. That’s why one lawmaker has introduced legislation demanding accountability and the recovery of billions of dollars thrown at failed Obamacare initiatives.
Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.) introduced the Transparency and Accountability of Failed Exchanges Act, which is aimed at auditing how $5.5 billion allocated for implementation of the Affordable Care Act. In addition, Allen wants the government to recover funds determined to have been wasted on frivolous or failed Obamacare projects.
The bill also would require states with failed Obamacare exchanges to return any unused funds and provide a clear accounting of how the rest of the money was spent.
As Democrat-led states have watched their in-house Obamacare exchanges go belly up, an interesting phenomenon has followed from each failure: Instead of going back to the U.S. Treasury, federal grant funds intended to prop up the state exchanges are being claimed by state Democratic leaders, ostensibly to make their states “whole.”
In fact, a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) showed that just $1 million has been returned to the federal government. Worse, just one-third of funds was unaccounted for; the other one-third was spent on expenses vaguely labeled as “outreach” and “education,” according to the report.
“After five years of failed policies and higher cost of care, it has become crystal clear that Obamacare was not well thought out. When this legislation was signed into law, the president freely gave money away to states to establish the state exchanges — however they forgot one piece of the puzzle. They provided no solution for recovering these funds when the state exchanges failed,” Allen said in a statement.
