A website used by journalists and others to check out all the tweeted messages that have been deleted by politicians has been blocked by Twitter.
Politwoops, a site that serves as a collection point of politicians’ tweets that are deleted – ostensibly after the original message writers determine they’re embarrassing, factually incorrect, or otherwise unworthy of public view – will no longer be allowed access to Twitter, the Associated Press reported.
That means the site won’t have access to the application that displays the deleted tweets – making the entire mission of Politwoops, which is in 30 different countries, moot.
Politwoops’ fans aren’t happy, seeing a little bit of revisionist history at play.
“The Open State Foundation was informed by Twitter that it suspended … access to Diplotwoods and all remaining Politwoops sites in 30 countries,” said the Open Foundation, the group that started the Politwoops sites in the Netherlands in 2010.
Open Foundation director Arjan El Fassed said the deleted comments ought to stay available for public consumption.
“What elected politicians publicly say is a matter of public record,” he said, AP reported. “Even when tweets are deleted, it’s part of parliamentary history.”
Twitter, for its part, said the suspension came after “thoughtful internal deliberation and close consideration of a number of factors,” AP said.
