Already content to alienate the Republican Party’s conservative base when it comes to illegal immigration, Jeb Bush has somehow managed to say exactly the wrong thing to gin up support from most everybody else.
Bush on Monday saw fit to target an immigrant group on few people’s political radar: Asians.
Speaking in Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border, Bush targeted Asians — a demographic that so far hasn’t been strongly represented in national media as a unified voting bloc — of using anchor babies as a way to extend their welcome in the U.S.
Amazingly, Bush attempted to deflect the controversy he generated from his use, last week, of the “anchor baby” with this clarification. From Agence France-Presse:
[W]hen responding to a question about whether the “anchor baby” row would hurt his ability to win the Hispanic vote, Bush said the situation has more to do with other immigrants.
“What I was talking about was the specific case of fraud being committed where there’s organized efforts — and frankly it’s more related to Asian people coming into our country, having children in that organized effort, taking advantage of a noble concept with birthright citizenship,” Bush said.
According to AFP’s citation of a Pew survey, Asian immigrants have been coming to America in slightly greater numbers than those from Latin America.
But they don’t hold the political clout that the trans-border voting bloc does. All Bush did by focusing on an ignored demographic is welcome new enemies into his growing camp of detractors.
