President Obama was interrupted by a heckler during his remarks at the LGBT Pride Month event at the White House, but quickly shut down the interruption with a blunt rebuttal: “You’re in my house,” he said.
The female heckler repeatedly shouted the president’s name, just shortly after Obama started speaking.
Obama’s response: “No, no, no, no. Listen, you’re in my house.”
Traditionally, however, the White House has been called the “people’s house” – and even first lady Michelle Obama has referenced it that way. On the White House webiste, a quote from the first lady states: “This is really what the White House is all about. It’s the ‘People’s House.’ It’s a place that is steeped in history, but it’s also a place where everyone should feel welcome. And that’s why my husband and I have made it our mission to open up the house to as many people as we can.”
Obama, mid-speech, warned the heckler she would be removed if she didn’t stop.
“You’re not going to get a good response from me by interrupting me like this,” Obama said. “Shame on you, you shouldn’t be doing this.”
The heckler was later identified as Jennicet Gutierrez with the Not One More Campaign, a group that opposes Obama’s deportation policies, the Hill reported.
Obama, on the heckler, then said: “As a general rule, I am just fine with a few hecklers. But not when I am up in the house. My attitude is if you’re eating the hor d’oeuvres, ou know what I’m saying? And drinking the booze? I know what’s right.”
