A stunning series of undercover videos appeared over the course of 2015 that revealed high-ranking officials in Planned Parenthood’s abortion business negotiating over the price they would be paid for the body parts of unborn babies.
One executive famously declared, during the course of those negotiations, “I want a Lamborghini,” a $200,000-plus exoticar.
The revelations of what Planned Parenthood was doing certainly were damaging: Congress started investigations, states withdrew funding and there were renewed calls to look into its practices even though the business fell, more or less, under the protection of a supportive U.S. president.
The problems for Americans were the disturbing images and statements from Planned Parenthood, but the organization itself considered the release of the video information, which it condemned as heavily edited, to be the problem.
So its solution?
Make it a crime to make those videos.
Planned Parenthood moved one step closer to that goal this week when the California Senate, late Wednesday, endorsed a proposal to do just that.
The Sacramento Bee, under the headline, “Planned Parenthood bill on secret videos advances after compromise,” explained that the plan “increases punishments for secret recordings like those that enveloped Planned Parenthood in controversy last summer.”
There had been objections from media organizations, who were appeased when language was changed to not apply a penalty when someone broadcasts such videos if they did not make them.
Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, a Democrat, claimed the bill was in response to “the growing threat to health care providers.”
“While it is already illegal in California to record a private conversation without the consent of all parties involved, Assembly Bill 1671 would create an additional crime if someone who makes such a recording of a health care provider distribute[s] that recording as well,” the Bee reported.
The investigators who released last year’s videos, from the Center for Medical Progress, were directly targeted by the legislation because of the revelations about the sales of aborted baby body parts its vidoes included.
The 26-13 vote was directly along party lines, with Democrats adopting the plan.
“When ’60 Minutes’ uses a hidden camera and discovers a unique story, it’s called outstanding journalism,” Sen. John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa, told the Bee. “But when a private citizen does it and unmasks a very, very unpleasant truth, it’s a call for legislation.”
The bill still has a concurrence vote before being moved to the governor, who has not said whether he’ll support the plan.
Officials for LiveAction, an organization that also has done undercover videos of abortion industry leaders to reveal misbehavior such as covering up for sex traffickers and failing to report child sexual assault, warned if the plan is adopted in California, Planned Parenthood soon will seek the legal power to suppress information about its activities all across the nation.
Live Action chief Lila Rose said, “For years, investigative journalists have recorded and exposed Planned Parenthood facilities across the country covering up for sex traffickers, failing to report child sexual abusers, and trafficking in baby body parts. Instead of being compelled to be more transparent with the public, taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood wants to jail journalists and whistleblowers who record and distribute footage that shows it potentially breaking the law.
“The California Newspaper Publishers Association – not an organization that’s necessarily sympathetic to the pro-life cause – said even the newly amended version of the bill still ‘potentially criminalizes speech.’ Planned Parenthood is brazenly attacking the First Amendment, aided and abetted by California legislators who are protecting a major campaign donor.
“When the public funds half of Planned Parenthood’s operations, it has a right to know that its money isn’t being used to break the law or commit abuses, and governments should be taking steps to make things more transparent, not less. Americans understand that abortion is a grave act, and with Planned Parenthood committing over 320,000 abortions each year, investigative journalists and whistleblowers have been the ones exposing the many abuses that often accompany it.”
She continued, “This bill doesn’t protect women; instead, it puts Planned Parenthood above the law and lets it hide potentially illegal and abusive activity from public view. If this bill becomes law in California, Planned Parenthood could attempt to pass similar bans all over the country.”
WND reports on the undercover videos date back to the beginning.
In the first undercover video released by CMP, Deborah Nucatola of Planned Parenthood commented on crushing babies.
“We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact,” she said.
