WikiLeaks already has assumed a co-equal role in America’s 2016 election to many of those players who consider themselves significant, the network, daily and station editorialists and more.
It’s released Democrat Party emails, resulting in the resignation of top party officials, it’s publicly promised that those who supply insider information probably will be happy with the results and it has made no secret of the fact that Americans likely will be getting access to a lot more heretofore “secret” details before the November election.
Now founder Julian Assange is making it clear that he’ll not take anything less than full and accurate representations by the mainstream outlets.
Following an interview he granted to the New York Times, there were a number of headlines based on the interview and resulting story about alleged links to the Russian government, about how he called Hillary Clinton a “demon,” and more.
He immediately set the record straight, leveling a blast at both the Times and Clinton.
On Twitter, he posted, “What we were drawing attention [to] is the amazing transformation that Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party are by becoming the national security party and the national security candidate by whipping up a neo-McCarthyist hysteria about Russia.
“Any serious analyst understands that China and the U.S. are the only real games in town. China has ten times the population of Russia, seven times the GDP. Russia has the GDP of Italy. It’s interesting in that it makes provocative statements and so on. It’s interesting, and of course in its own neck of the woods – countries between Russia and China, the Caucasus and so on—of course Russia is very significant for them, but in the world stage Russia is a bit player.
“That attempted re-framing by Hillary Clinton to declare media organizations that are publishing material that shows illicit behavior in the DNC to fix the election for her as somehow us being Russian agents, similar criticism has emerged from people connected to her campaign against the Intercept, where Glenn Greenwald works,” he said.
“Her campaign has effectively, and maybe even directly, called Donald Trump, the opposition leader in this case, a Russian agent. … Jill Stein, the Greens Party candidate, effectively the 4th candidate in terms of numbers – has also been called a Russian agent,” he continued.
“This is a neo-McCarthyist hysteria. What kind of press environment is this going to lead to, post-election? The American liberal press, in falling over themselves to defend Hillary Clinton, are erecting a demon that’s going [to] put nooses around everyone’s necks when she wins the election which she is almost certainly going to do.”
The International Business Times said the missive followed Assange’s interview with the Times, and then its online conversation with investigative reporter Jo Becker.
Assange explained the situation is not just how the report framed it.
“WikiLeaks and I are not defending Donald Trump,” he said, confirming that he has gotten “some interesting information” about the GOP.
But, he said, “It is difficult to compete with the controversial statements coming out of his (Trump’s) mouth but he has extensive business relationships and some of those can be interesting.”
Further, he noted, there is “more interesting and entertaining material” becoming available about the Clinton Foundation.
And he noted the conflict of interest that was somehow left out of the Times story.
“The New York Times Editorial Board has endorsed Hillary Clinton, however this is not disclosed in the article. The only hard news in the article is that ‘American officials say Mr. Assange and WikiLeaks probably have no direct ties to Russian intelligence services,’” the group said.
He ridiculed the claims that DNC documents leaked were provided by Russian agents.
There was “no evidence” of that, he said.
Politico also cited the Times article written by Jo Becker, Steven Erlanger and Eric Schmitt, which put “Assange’s relationship with Russia under the microscope and asserts that WikiLeaks document dumps benefit Russia directly.”
The Daily Mail noted Assange, who has been in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London since 2012, has reported looking for possible links between Trump’s finances and Russia, and has not uncovered any.
United States government officials, under the administration of Barack Obama, who is working to get Clinton elected, said they believe with a “high degree of confidence that the Democratic Party material was hacked by the Russian government,” the report said.
The Washington Examiner said while the Times article “sought to impugn … Assange,” the dispute was a continuation of a confrontation between Assange and Becker.
Said the report, “The [Assange] statement picked the Times’ story apart, particularly for what WikiLeaks said were factual inaccuracies. Those included claims that Russia once issued Assange a visa, and a claim about the legal status of a United Nations decision on Assange’s legal status.
“WikiLeaks also rejected assertions that the organization has been too easy on the Russian government and its allies, including Syrian President Bashar Assad. ‘It is absurdly false that WikiLeaks has not produced critical material on the Assad government,’ the group said. ‘WikiLeaks has published 2.3 million documents from the Assad government, a Russian ally, including the head of state, Bashar al Assad’s personal emails.’”
