Middle East threats prompt call for defense to biowarfare

Microbes1

The free world already is on notice to be alert for biological warfare, given comments from the chief of Iran’s Passive Defense Organization just a few years ago that viruses, parasites, botanical poisons and animal poisons all could be used.

Gen. Gholamreza Jalali at the time said, “The environmental threats include humans, domesticated animals, poultry, environment, natural resources, food industry and drinking water.”

The United Nations’ Biological Weapons Convention has banned the development, production and stockpiling of these threats since 1975, but based on orders from Iran’s supreme leader at the time, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country had several labs working independently of each other in developing the biological elements.

The general said the effort was defensive, after reports described how the country was working with anthrax, encephalitis, yellow rain, SARS, Ebola, cholera, smallpox and plague.

Now a team of scientists is suggesting that it would be really good if there were established at least in several Middle East/North Africa nations the capabilities of testing for those substances, of facilities for microbial forensics, according to a new report from Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

“Establishing a microbial forensics capability in the MENA region is still many years away and it is unlikely that many countries will ever have a robust capability,” says a report from Federal of American Scientists.

“However, establishing credibility of the results offered by microbial forensic analysis performed by western states and/or made today in workshops and training have the ability to prepare the policy landscape for the day in which the source of a bio attack, either man-made or from nature, needs to be accurately attributed.

“It is during a crisis or suspected attack when trust in and understanding of the science is critical. If the trust has not been built prior to the incident, it won’t be there at the time of the incident when it is needed,” the report said.

The recommendations come in a report prepared for the Department of State Bureau of Arms Control and Verification.

Written by Drs. Chrisopher Bidwell and Randall Murch, it recommends efforts to set up pilot programs in Jordan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

The science organization looked at the biological threats in the region, which already has dealt with Avian Bird Flu, MERS-Corona virus and allegations of Ricin production and use in recent years.
