Nearly half of the terror organizations plots to take lives in the West over the past two years have been successful, according to a Department of Homeland Security report.
The report shows that 875 people in western countries have lost their lives to Islamic extremists this year. That’s compared to 720 last year.
Forty-four percent of ISIS’s planned attacks on western targets were deemed successful by DHS officials.
The U.S. and France were named as prime targets for ISIS-inspired terror, with 41 of the 100 or so ISIS plots taking place on U.S. soil and 20 plots taking place in France since 2014.
The terror organization’s “crowdsourcing” model for recruiting extremists is to blame, officials said.
“This year during Ramadan, ISIS urged supporters around the world to conduct attacks in their homelands, and followers appear to have responded, such as the gunman in the Orlando attack. In a separate instance, a man in France killed a police chief and his wife in their home, citing ISIS’s call for operations during the holy month,” the report stated.
President Obama warned recently that even when ISIS loses ground in the Middle East, it’s capability to attack the U.S. remains strong.
“The decline of ISIL in Syria and Iraq appears to be causing it to shift to tactics that we’ve seen before, an even greater emphasis on encouraging high-profile terrorist attacks, including in the United States,” Obama said.
