Trump: Bernie should run as independent

GOP presidential race front-runner Donald Trump has come up with a suggestion that could make it easier for Hillary Clinton to get Democratic nod for the race.

But perhaps much harder to win the general election.

He thinks Bernie Sanders, the self-avowed socialist opposing Clinton for the party’s nomination, should run as an independent.

Trump tweeted, “Bernie Sanders has been treated terribly by the Democrats – both with delegates & otherwise.”

“He should show them, and run as an Independent!”

Trump, who famously during the first GOP debate in this race said he wouldn’t promise never to leave the party and run as an independent, for the first time in his campaign, according to AOL News, “shared an opinion that supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders are likely to agree with.”

“While he hasn’t gone so far as to threaten a third-party run, Sanders doesn’t appear prepared to enthusiastically endorse Clinton if she wins the nomination,” the report said. “When asked at an MSNBC town hall on Monday if he would tell his supporters to back Clinton if he’s not on the ballot come November, he stopped short.”

Should Sanders run as an independent, he likely would split the progressive vote with Hillary Clinton.

At the time, Sanders said, “We’re not a movement where I can snap my fingers and say to you or to anybody else what you should do, that you should all listen to me. You shouldn’t. You make these decisions yourself.”

Going independent doesn’t seem impossible for Trump himself even now, especially if he faces significant party headwinds when it comes to the convention and he’s still the leader among delegate totals.

Clinton was favored among Democrats, as was Trump in the GOP, as voters cast ballots on Tuseday in party primaries in Maryland, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Delaware.

The AOL report noted, however, that Sanders hasn’t had much encouragement for Trump.

“We are not going to elect a president who insults people, every single day,” he said last month. “The American people will not elect Donald Trump president because he insults Mexicans; he insults Muslims; he insults women; he insults veterans; he insults the African American community.”
