Remember when House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Congress needed to pass Obamacare so Americans could find out what was in the president’s healthcare overhaul bill? Now that we’ve all witnessed the disaster firsthand, Pelosi says Americans need to elect Hillary Clinton to find out how she will fix it.
It turns out Pelosi didn’t really understand Obamacare all that well when she pushed Americans to support the healthcare overhaul. That, or she did and she wanted it to fail.
“I wanted single payer– I mean, I’d love a single payer, but we’re not there. I wanted a public option, which would address that. But we’ve never done anything, whether it was Social Security, Medicare and the rest where we haven’t said, ‘Let’s see how it works and let’s improve it.’”
Single payer healthcare in the U.S. would mean expanding Medicaid to cover a wider range of wage earners.
Democratic nominee Clinton is vowing to “fix” Obamacare by expanding portions of the president’s plan that allow the federal government to subsidize and regulate U.S. healthcare.
GOP nominee Donald Trump, vowing to let Obamacare collapse under its own weight, told viewers of the Sunday presidential debate that Clinton’s plans amount to begging Congress for more money for the failing healthcare system.
“We have to repeal it and replace it with something absolutely much less expensive and something that works, where your plan can actually be tailored. We have to get rid of the lines around the state, artificial lines, where we stop insurance companies from coming in and competing, because they want — and President Obama and whoever was working on it — they want to leave those lines, because that gives the insurance companies essentially monopolies. We want competition,” he said.
But, as Reason’s Peter Suderman recently pointed out, both candidate’s Obamacare plans are seriously lacking in detail.
He wrote: “The state of the Obamacare debate in the presidential race is a pretty decent gauge of the state of the Obamacare debate nationally: No one really likes the law as it is—and no one has a plan to fix it.”
Which means Americans are right back where we were when Pelosi declared in 2010: “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”
There’s just one problem. Obamacare, which no one seems to like, is slated to cost taxpayers more than $1.3 trillion over the next decade if it isn’t dismantled.
