Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte, who is a leading contender for president of the Philippines, commented on the recent prison gang rape of an Australian woman by saying she was so beautiful, he should have been first.
Duterte, referring to himself in the third person, said this, the Washington Post reported: “I was angry because she was raped, that’s one thing. But she was so beautiful, the mayor should have been first. What a waste.”
The Australian Embassy in the Philippines issued a scathing response on Facebook on Monday, writing: “Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialized. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable anytime, anywhere.”
A YouTube video of the mayor making the remarks at a campaign rally in Quezon City recently surfaced, sending social media posters into overtime, some of whom drew parallels with Donald Trump. But as the Washington Post opined, “While commentators have started referring to him as another Donald Trump, this guy makes Mr. Trump look like Mr. Rogers. Among the previous nicknames for Duterte are ‘the punisher’ and ‘Duterte Harry,’ after the Clint Eastwood character Dirty Harry.”
Duterte’s comments referred to an August 1989 incident at the Davao City Jail. Then, inmates overpowered guards, seized their weapons and took 15 people hostage. Among the 15 was a 36-year-old Australian lay minister named Jacqueline Hamill.
Hamill, who had her throat slashed and was then shot to death during the prisoner uprising, had told another hostage before she died that she had been raped by the inmates.
Duterte’s full comments during his campaign stop, as translated and reported by Rappler: “All the women were raped so during the first assault, because they retreated, the bodies they used as a cover, one of them was the corpse of the Australian woman layminister. Tsk, this is a problem. When the bodies were brought out, they were wrapped. I looked at her face, son of a bitch, she looks like a beautiful American actress. Son of a bitch, what a waste. What came to mind was, they raped her, they lined up. I was angry because she was raped, that’s one thing. But she was so beautiful, the mayor should have been first. What a waste.”
His own government wasn’t pleased.
Jejomar Binay, vice president of the Philippines, meanwhile, tweeted this directly to Duterte: “You are a crazy maniac who doesn’t respect women and doesn’t deserve to be president.”
