Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. John Kasich
The much-talked about Gov. John Kasich-Sen. Ted Cruz pact to unite to fight against Republican front-runner Donald Trump may already have met its end.
As Politico reported, just hours after news of the joint venture to take down Trump made national headlines, Kasich was saying: “I’ve never told [Indiana voters] not to vote for me. They should vote for me.”
But as WND previously reported, the Cruz campaign, after making the deal with Kasich, was under the impression Indiana was the senator’s state to win.
“To ensure that we nominate a Republican who can unify the Republican Party and win in November, our campaign will focus its time and resources in Indiana and in turn, clear the path for Gov. Kasich to compete in Oregon and New Mexico,” said Jeff Roe, Cruz’s campaign manager, in a statement released shortly after news of the second- and third-place GOP picks’ pact rocked the media, as reported by WND.
But now, Kasich seems to be singing a different tune.
“I’m not over [in Indiana] campaigning and spending resources,” he said, Politico reported. “We have limited resources. Mine is like the people’s campaign. I have a campaign where, you know, we’ve been outspent basically 50-to-1. You folks have been counting me out before I even got to New Hampshire. And now we can’t jam all of you into this diner. I mean, everybody chill out.”
Kasich’s chief strategist John Weaver rushed to clarify.
“We’re not telling voters who to vote for in IN,” he said, in a Twitter post, “only where we are going to spend resources to ultimately defeat Hillary. They get it.”
Trump, meanwhile, jumped on the comments from Kasich to mock in a tweet: “Kasich just announced that he wants the people of Indiana to vote for him. Typical politician – can’t make a deal work.”
And from Rhode Island, he told supporters: “So they colluded and, actually, I was happy because it shows how weak they are. It shows how pathetic they are. If you collude in business, or if you collude in the stock market, they put you in jail. But in politics, because it’s a corrupt enterprise, in politics you’re allowed to collude.”
One Trump operative also told Politico the billionaire’s camp isn’t really worried about any Kasich-Cruz pact.
“Nobody’s really concerned about it,” the operative said. “It’s the next logical step for people who are losing. It’s become increasingly clear that the Republican primary electorate has been ignoring these strategic games. We don’t think John Q. Lunchbuckets in Indiana is going to take it very well, being told what to do. It’s just the cynical manipulations of two campaigns who don’t have anywhere else to go.”
