Sanders zooms into virtual tie with Hillary

Bernie Sanders is proving a tough competitor to Hillary Clinton.

Bernie Sanders is proving a tough competitor to Hillary Clinton.

Apparently, the socialist message is resonating on the Democratic Party’s trail, as Bernie Sanders is bringing the heat on Hillary Clinton, reaching virtual-tie status in the latest Quinnipiac University national poll.

Clinton maintains a slight 2-percentage point lead over Sanders, but that’s well within the poll’s 4.5 plus-or-minus percentage points margin of error for Democrats.

The poll of 1,125 registered U.S. voters was conducted in the days after the Iowa caucuses. The sampling included 507 Republicans, and included a 4.4 percentage points margin of error, and 484 Democrats, where the margin of error was 4.5.

Eleven percent are still undecided on the Democratic side.

Quinnipiac’s latest comes after Clinton barely squeaked by a win in Iowa. And the shift in momentum is a bit of a shock.

Just two months ago, Quinnipiac put the national numbers for Clinton at 61 percent, versus Sanders at 30 percent.

Another finding from the poll: Sanders, not Clinton, has a better chance of winning in the general election.

“Democrats nationwide are feeling the Bern as Sen. Bernie Sanders closes a 31-point gap to tie Secretary Hillary Clinton,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll.

And on the Republican side, Donald Trump is still leading – though Sen. Marco Rubio is coming on strong.

“But that’s not the whole story nine months before Election Day,” Malloy said. “In mano a mano, or mano a womano, face-offs with all contenders, Sanders and Rubio would be the candidates left standing. … While Trump, Clinton and [Sen. Ted] Cruz wallow in a negative favorability swamp, by comparison, Rubio and Sanders are rock stars.”

Sanders, a self-declared socialist who serves as an independent for Vermont but who claimed in a recent interview to be a Democrat at heart, as WND reported, has been making waves on the campaign trail by pressing for free college, promising to redistribute wealthy income via taxation and vowing to take on Wall Street and big business.
