U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the Justice Department, under her watch, will act completely independent of the political world on all matters regarding Hillary Clinton and her handling of sensitive and classified information on her home-based email server system.
The FBI is currently investigating Clinton’s email issue. And while some have expressed doubts the investigation could continue absent political considerations, Lynch reminded her department works above that fray, solely by law.
“That matter is being handled by career independent law enforcement agents, FBI agents, as well as career independent attorneys in the Department of Justice,” Lynch said, during a hearing before a House Appropriations subcommittee, the Hill reported. “They follow the evidence. They look at the law and they’ll make a recommendation to me when the time is appropriate.”
She also said Clinton’s case would be handled in a manner akin to all others.
“This will be conducted as every other case,” she said, “and we will review all the facts and all the evidence and come to an independent conclusion as to how to handle it.”
FBI Director James Comey has pledged similarly on prior occasions, saying his bureau cares little for the politics of Clinton’s investigation.
Lynch, who previously turned away a Republican-led effort to appoint a special prosecutor in the case, also told members of Congress she is “aware of no efforts [to] undermine” the investigation of Clinton’s email.
