Rafael Cruz, the father of GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, is warning Americans to do some serious fruit-checking before they vote this election season.
“There are many campaign conservatives – people that will tell you what you want to hear,” Cruz said during a recent interview on the Jesse Lee Peterson Show. “What I recommend is stop listening to the rhetoric, look at their record. Stop listening to what they say. Look at what they’ve done and what they do.
“Jesus put it this way: ‘You shall know them by their fruits.’ Check the fruit.”
Cruz believes if voters examine the fruits his son Ted has borne, they will see they can trust him. He noted Ted has been at the forefront of many battles, such as the fight to repeal Obamacare, the fight to preserve the Second Amendment, and the fight for the right to life.
Jesse Lee Peterson, the host, told Rafael how much he values Ted’s principled stands in the Senate.
“I think most Americans appreciate the way he stood up to the RINO Republicans and others who would not deal with Barack Obama the proper way, just allowing him to do whatever he wants,” said Peterson, a WND columnist and author of “The Antidote.” “For me, that stood out like nothing else. I do appreciate that.”
The elder Cruz, who authored the new book “A Time for Action: Empowering the Faithful to Reclaim America,” replied that’s the very reason so many Washington insiders dislike Ted, because he exposes the establishment.
“He talks about what he calls the ‘Washington Cartel,’” Cruz said of his son. “Corrupt career politicians in both parties that just want to continue the gravy train. They don’t want anything to change, and Ted threatens them because he wants to restore America back to the Constitution, to the rule of law, to limited government, to get judges to stop legislating from the bench, to restore us to the Judeo-Christian principles, to the constitutional principles that have made America the greatest country on the face of the Earth.”

“Rafael does not take American principles for granted, having grown up under an oppressive military dictatorship in Cuba. As a young man he escaped to the United States and found it a freer and more prosperous nation than Fulgencio Batista’s Cuba.
When Ted was young, Rafael constantly reminded him of the importance of American freedom, saying: “You know, Ted, when I lost my freedom in Cuba I had a place to come. If we lose our freedoms here, where do we go?”
He told Peterson: “I understand how valuable freedom is and how fragile it is. We have to fight to protect our freedom. And our freedoms are being eroded more and more every day by taxation, by regulation, by all these unlawful, unconstitutional executive actions that the president is taking. We have right now a lawless administration, and it’s taking a toll on every American.”
Peterson agreed there is no place to go if Americans should lose their freedoms.
“That’s why I can’t understand why anybody would want to weaken this country, whether they are liberal, conservative, Republican, or Democrat,” the host said. “I don’t understand why they would fight to destroy their own country when we are the greatest country in the world; there’s nowhere else to go. It’s mind-blowing to me.”
Cruz cited Bernie Sanders’ high taxation proposals as an example of a policy that would weaken the country by suffocating those who create jobs.
“You listen to Bernie Sanders [who] wants to give everything for free,” Cruz said. “Where does the money come from? ‘Oh, we’ll take it from the rich. Let’s tax the rich at 90 percent.’”
Peterson asked Cruz about his son’s main competitor for the Republican nomination, Donald Trump.
“Trump actually has brought something to the Republican Party that was needed,” Cruz responded. “He has brought to the forefront the frustration of America. America is frustrated because politicians are not listening. You have this Washington cartel that my son talks about, and people are frustrated. They don’t want business as usual. They don’t want any of these people that want to preserve the status quo. They want a new America. They want the America that the Framers gave us.”
But, naturally, Cruz asserted his son, not Trump, is the best candidate to bring back the great America the Founding Fathers created. He said Ted loves the Constitution and holds the necessary servant attitude that a president should have.
“He truly is a servant to we the people,” Cruz claimed. “He understands that we don’t work for him, he works for us, and he wants to be president to serve we the people, to serve all Americans regardless of race or economic status or whatever. He wants to represent every American. That’s what he’s about.”
Throughout the interview, Peterson was impressed by the strong case Cruz made for his son.
“You know, hearing you speak of your son, it makes me want to go out and vote for him today,” Peterson gushed. “He does a good job for himself, but I think you represent him better than he represents himself.”
Cruz repaid the compliment at the end of the interview.
“I tell you what, I know that you’re making a difference,” Cruz said to Peterson. “We need more voices like you that would do what Jesus said – shout it from the housetops. We cannot be silent. We’ve got to expose the lies around us and just exult the truth, because truth will make you free.”
