Trump: Cruz spin on birth, loans ‘worse than Hillary’

Donald Trump says Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s attempts explain away political liabilities is “worse than Hillary, when you think about it.”

The Republican front-runner pulled no punches on Wednesday as he lashed out over the senator’s past dual citizenship with Canada and his failure to disclose a pair of loans to election officials in 2012.

“He said with being a Canadian citizen, he said, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that,” Trump told an audience at an Iowa campaign event. “How did he not know that? Then he said with the loans, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that.’ Smart guy. He doesn’t know that? Yeah. That’s worse than Hillary, when you think about it.”

Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada, on Dec. 22, 1970, but renounced his dual citizenship in 2014. His mother was a U.S. citizen, but his father had been born in Cuba.

Trump has insisted since Jan. 5 that those factors may not pass the natural-born citizen requirement of U.S. presidents.

“I’d hate to see something like that get in his way,” Trump told the Washington Post Jan. 5. “But a lot of people are talking about it, and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport.”

Trump also said Cruz’s failure to disclose personal loans from Citigroup Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. totaling between $500,000 and $1 million should cast doubt on the candidate’s integrity. The loans were filed with the Senate but not the FEC.

“Here’s a guy with two bank loans – that we know of. Goldman Sachs owns him,” said Trump on Wednesday. “Remember that, folks: They own him. And what he did was wrong. Because he didn’t want you to know that he’s dealing with banks.”

The Texas senator dismissed the charges while speaking with reporters Jan. 14.

“Those loans have been disclosed over and over and over again on multiple filings. If it was the case that they were not filed exactly as the FEC requires, then we’ll amend the filings,” said Cruz, the Wall Street Journal reported. “But all of the information has been public and transparent for many years and that’s the end of that.”

Trump has lead his Republican rivals on a national level since August, but he and Cruz are in a close race with Iowa caucus-goers. Cruz has hit the billionaire just as hard in recent days.

“Donald’s record does not match what he says as a candidate,” Cruz told reporters in Fort Mill, South Carolina, Jan. 16, the Texas Tribune reported. “I recognize what Donald says on the campaign trail today is fairly conservative, but voters are discerning.”

The senator went on to say that “for much of his life, Donald was financially supporting” politicians like former New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“It’s a fair inference that he supports their policies,” said Cruz.
