“American Sniper” widow Taya Kyle dismantled the rationale for President Obama’s executive orders on gun control during CNN’s town-hall event Thursday night.
Kyle was one of multiple attendees who confronted Obama during a televised debate at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
“You talk about the [National Rifle Association] and how after a mass shooting that gun sales go up. I would argue that it’s not necessarily that I think someone is going to take my gun from me, it’s that I have the hope, the hope that I can protect myself … that I have the freedom to carry whatever weapon I think I need,” Kyle told Obama.
The president sat patiently with his finger on his lip while the gun-rights activist noted that criminals, by definition, do not follow the law. She then mentioned how recent mass shootings, such as the Dec. 2 terror attack in San Bernardino, California, would not have been prevented by Obama’s 10 executive orders.
“I don’t know that any of them would have been stopped by a background check,” said Kyle. “The people who are murdering are breaking the law, but they also don’t have the moral code that we have. So they can do the same amount of damage with a pipe bomb. The problem is that they want to murder. … We are at the lowest murder rate in our country. All time of low of murders. All time high for gun ownership. Why not celebrate where we are?”
The president began his reply by saying he was grateful for her late husband’s service. Former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle was killed Feb. 2, 2013, at a Texas gun range. He and fellow veteran Chad Littlefield were ambushed from behind by PTSD-afflicted Eddie Ray Routh.
Routh was convicted by a Texas jury of capital murder Feb. 25, 2015. The jury rejected an insanity defense by Routh’s legal team. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
“What you said about murder rates and violent crime generally is something we don’t celebrate enough,” Obama said. “The fact of the matter is that violent crime has been steadily declining across America for a pretty long time. And you wouldn’t always know it from watching television.”
Obama then said he was “not sure” there is a “one-to-one correlation” between rising gun sales and declining murder rates because “if you look at the where the areas are with the highest gun ownership, those are the places that the crime hasn’t dropped down that much.”
The president said his “most important point” was that Americans “will be able to purchase a firearm, some criminals will get their hands on firearms even if there is a background check.”

Kyle also wrote an op-ed for CNN on Thursday further detailing her position.
“I have been touched by extreme violence and I have been robbed of the life I always wanted by someone who chose to do evil. Because I have felt, and lived, all of these things, I have spent much time thinking about evil, freedom and not only the world we live in, but the country too,” wrote Kyle.
“We can’t legislate human nature. If we add up the number of these mass killers over the last decade, how many people are we talking about? Fewer than 40 over the last decade? Do we want to make laws for millions based on the choices of fewer than 40 evildoers?”
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch essentially answered Kyle’s question on Tuesday.
“The goal is keeping bad actors away from firearms,” Lynch told reporters after Obama changed the way gun sales are monitored and carried out.
Obama’s executive orders redefined a gun “dealer” to include many people who sell even a single gun annually, WND reported.
