Donald Trump said on national television on ABC’s “This Week” he favored the return of legal waterboarding because it would help in the gathering of counterterrorism intelligence, and because it’s only a drop in the bucket compared to how terrorists treat their enemies.
His comments have created a firestorm on Twitter, where hundreds of media outlets and posters have tweeted and retweeted the remarks.
Trump on ABC first referenced James Foley, the American journalist who was brutally murdered by beheading by ISIS terrorists, and then spoke of the need to bring back to the table “strong interrogation” techniques like waterboarding, PJ Media reported.
“I think waterboarding is peanuts compared to what they do to us,” he said, in widely reported comments that were still making media waves on Monday. “What they’re doing to us, what they did to James Foley when they chopped off his head, that’s a whole different level and I would absolutely bring back interrogation and strong interrogation.”
In waterboarding, a cloth is placed over the suspect’s faced and water poured over the cloth. The effect is the suspect feels as if he or she is drowning.
The CIA used the technique to gather intelligence in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on U.S. soil. The United Nations calls waterboarding torture, however, and the Obama administration does not endorse its use.
