GOP presidential candidate recently told a crowd that he would use waterboarding to try to extract information from terror suspects because “they deserve it.”
“Would I approve waterboarding? You bet your ass I would — in a heartbeat,” he said at a rally in Columbus, Ohio. “I would approve more than that.
Waterboarding, Trump said, is nowhere near as cruel as the terror tactics currently being used by U.S. enemies.
“On the other side, they chop off our young people’s heads and they put them on a stick,” he said. “On the other side, they build these iron cages and they put 20 people in them and they drop them in the ocean for 15 minutes and then pull them up 15 minutes later.”
Trump said that opposition to waterboarding is a symptom of political correctness, citing “very important” unnamed sources who privately admit the effectiveness of the tactic to him despite their public opinions.
“Believe me, it works,” he added. “And you know what? If it doesn’t work, they deserve it anyway, for what they’re doing.”
Trump would have to reverse a ban on the enhanced interrogation practice put in place by President Obama if he wished to resume waterboarding of terror suspects following a successful election.
