Rand Paul faults media for Trump’s popularity

Sen. Rand Paul, one of the 10 Republican candidates (there are 17 total) for president whose poll numbers put him in the top-tier 9 p.m. Fox News debate on Thursday, took a shot at the media, albeit half-jokingly, by saying a good portion of fellow GOP White House hopeful Donald Trump’s popularity was due the non-stop news coverage he’s received.

“You all covered him with about a billion dollars’ worth of news,” he said, while addressing on “CBS This Morning” the soaring poll popularity of the Donald.

Sen. Rand Paul says he wrote “Taking a Stand: Moving Beyond Partisan Politics to Unite America,” to “return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government.”

He then shrugged and said, “the news is what the news is,” but still bemoaned the inability of candidates, himself included, to streamline coverage to focus on policy.

“I’ve really had a little trouble getting traction with getting the message out,” Paul said, Mediaite reported. “You have to admit that there’s been an extraordinary amount of attention paid to one person and I think anybody’s numbers would rise with that amount of attention.”

Paul also touched on his debate strategy against Trump and eight others.

“Our job,” he said, “is to step up, defend and maybe demolish some other bad ideas that are out there or point out that maybe there are some empty suits without ideas.”
