WASHINGTON – As Iran and its nuclear agreement with the U.S. undergo scrutiny in Congress, the Obama administration is in the bizarre position of acting as an agent for the mullah-led regime, contended Middle East specialist Caroline Glick in a briefing Thursday on Capitol Hill.
“They actually have to be apologists for Iran toward the American people – hide Iranian threats to the United States, from the American public, because if they don’t do that, then they cannot justify their policy,” she said of the Departments of State and Justice in particular.
Caroline Glick was born and raised in the Chicago area and became an Israeli citizen as a young adult.
Glick, a former assistant foreign policy adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is the deputy managing editor of the Jerusalem Post and the senior fellow for Middle East affairs at the Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C., which hosted the event.

The Obama administration, she said, wants to hide evidence from the American people and Congress demonstrating Iran is “still a rogue state with hegemonic and genocidal ambitions toward the U.S. and Israel, and international aspirations to foment jihad.”
“This deal exacerbates all of the threats Iran poses to the U.S. in fundamental ways,” she said.
She noted Hezbollah is still a proxy of Iran, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is spreading its influence in Latin America and evidence seized from the compound where Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden indicates al-Qaida has “ongoing, deep and strategic operations with Iran.”
The Obama administration, however, refuses to make the contents of the documents public, she said, citing a report by the Weekly Standard’s Steve Hayes.
All indications are that Iran has not abandoned its pledge to destroy the U.S., she said, as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei leads crowds in “Death to America” chants while rejecting Washington’s moves to collaborate with Tehran on settling the Syrian war and on battling ISIS.
The threat to the U.S., she said, is real, with intelligence estimates of Iran acquiring ICBMs, or intercontinental ballistic missiles, within eight years.
And, she said, there’s a threat few have thought about outside of Capitol Hill: an electromagnetic pulse attack caused by a high-altitude nuclear explosion that could send the U.S. back to the 19th century in an instant.
‘Imperils’ U.S.
She dismissed as “false” the “central claim” of President Obama’s speech Wednesday at American University that the only opponents of the agreement are Republican partisans and people “under the influence of a foreign power, meaning the Jews.”
“You cannot support this agreement if you care about America’s national security. Opposing this is a supreme act of patriotism,” she said.
“Supporting this agreement is siding with a policy that imperils the United States.”
In his hour-long speech, Obama called it “a very good deal,” insisting it “cuts off all of Iran’s pathways to a bomb.”
Congress is preparing to vote on the deal in September. Obama has promised to veto a rejection, which would require both the Senate and House to come up with a two-thirds majority.
Meanwhile, polls indicate 80 percent of Israelis oppose the deal and about three-fourths support Netanyahu’s opposition, including bringing his case to Congress.
Glick, who is on Capitol Hill to persuade Congress members to oppose the deal, said everyone understands that it puts Israel’s national security at risk, but the implications for U.S. national security “must become the focus of this discussion in this city and throughout the United States in the coming weeks.”
Glick said the Israeli political left is “in mourning” after Obama’s speech, because “he essentially cashiered America’s strategic alliance with Israel.”
“It’s very disconcerting and devastating and depressing for Israelis who have always trusted the United States and now have been betrayed in such a fundamental way by the White House, by the president, and in such public way as well,” she said.
‘Capacity to cheat’
Glick said the deal gives Iran “limitless capacity to cheat.”
Tehran has 24 days to “wipe clean” any site that is exposed by international inspectors, and, already, satellite images at Iran’s Parchin military site taken since the agreement was signed July 14 have raised suspicions it is trying to scrub evidence before U.N. inspectors can examine it.
Noting Iran has pledged to annihilate Israel, Glick said “nuclear arms in the hands of these people constitute a mortal threat.”
Nuclear experts estimate the deal extends the time Iran can acquire weapons only by anywhere from one month to three or four months while releasing $150 billion to Tehran. Citing former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren, the figure could be as high as $700 billion, if the full impact on removing sanctions and granting other benefits is taken into account, Glick said.
“They will have nuclear bombs, and they will be wealthy,” she said.
“The idea that this does anything to stop Iran is false and contemptuous of the American public and the global community.”
Glick, who immigrated to Israel in 1991, writes a weekly column in Hebrew for the Makor Rishon newspaper in Israel. She’s the author of “The Israeli Solution: A One-State Plan for Peace in the Middle East,” which presents evidence that Israel would maintain a strong and growing Jewish majority in a “unitary state” that includes the territory within the 1949 armistice lines along with Judea and Samaria, the West Bank.
