Helpful hints for staying healthy

Dear Bob,

I read your Bob Livingston Letter and have some questions for you. If you could answer these questions it would be so helpful. At the natural food store, I tried to get some pumpkin seed and all they had was pumpkin seed oil. Is the oil just as good as the seed? I also was not able to get Beta-Silosterol and the stinging nettle that you use. The owner said he did not get them in very often. And what about the progesterone cream that you use? I am 80 years old.

In vitamin D, can you tell the difference in natural vitamin D and the man-made vitamin D? I will be waiting to hear from you about these questions.

Yours truly,

Denny B.

Dear Denny B.

For years, I have kept a Ziploc bag of pumpkin seed (high in zinc) on my car seat to eat daily. I eat at least two tablespoons a day. They are available at the local grocery store and packaged by David, the company that also packages sunflower seeds. There are probably more packagers as well. The pumpkin seed oil also provides the health benefits and can be used in cooking and on salads.

I use stinging nettle in the form of Palmettoplex and Cataplex F by Standard Process (standardprocess.com or 800-848-5061).

There are many natural prostate formulas with beta sitosterol. GNC has one called Mega Strength Beta Sitosterol. You can go to one of their stores or shop online. Other brands are available at health food stores or through Amazon.

For progesterone cream, use only natural progesterone cream, about one-eighth teaspoon per day for men, as advised by Dr. John Lee. There are several available online if your health store does not carry it. The progesterone cream you buy should contain “USP progesterone,” where USP stands for “United States Pharmacopia,” which refers to the grade or purity of the product. Opt for a cream that contains 400-500 mg of progesterone per ounce and states so clearly on the label, and you know that one-eighth teaspoon equals 8-10 mg. Apply it to either the chest, inner arms, inner thighs or abdomen once per day.

There is a huge difference between natural and synthetic vitamin D. Make sure you are using natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and not synthetic vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Most vitamin D prescriptions are for ergocalciferol. Ergocalciferol has been linked to a host of health problems like high calcium levels; nausea; vomiting; constipation; loss of appetite; increased thirst; urinary dysfunction; altered mood and mood swings; severe lethargy; rashes; itching and swelling of the face, mouth and throat; severe dizziness; and breathing problems.

Best wishes,

Bob
