After Obamacare consultant Jonathan Gruber created all kinds of headaches for the Obama administration by being outed for disdainful remarks about the law’s reliance on “the stupidity of the American voter,” the White House spun his role in shaping Obamacare as minimal.
After Gruber’s remarks were unearthed by a regular guy searching the Internet, President Obama put as much distance as possible between his administration and the MIT economist, with Obama referring to Gruber as “some adviser who never worked on our staff.”
But The Wall Street Journal revealed Sunday that Gruber was far more integral than that, working “more closely than previously known with the White House and top federal officials to shape the law.” WSJ pored over 20,000 previously unreleased emails between Gruber and federal officials exchanged from January 2009 to March 2010, concluding that Gruber played a major role in hammering out the Affordable Care Act’s final language.
“One email indicates Mr. Gruber was invited to meet with Mr. Obama. In a July 2009 email, he wrote that Mr. Orszag had ‘invited me to meet with the head honcho to talk about cost control,’” WSJ reports.
“‘Thank you for being an integral part of getting us to this historic moment,’ according to Sept. 9, 2009 email to Mr. Gruber from Jeanne Lambrew, a top Obama administration health adviser who worked at HHS and the White House. In a November 2009 email, she called Mr. Gruber ‘our hero.’”
But, of course, yesterday’s hero is today’s cold fish. Here’s Obama squirming to get some separation from Gruber last year:
So, shockingly, Obama lied. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough even managed to get Mika Brzezinski, his liberal co-host on the “Morning Joe” show, to agree that the White House was “Gruber-ing” the public about Gruber’s role Monday, asking for some frankly worded discourse about the Obama administration’s communication tactics.
“Mika, let me see if one person will talk straight: the White House assured us that Mr. Gruber was a bit player. It appears now that was not true,” Scarborough observed. “Did the White House lie about Mr. Gruber’s involvement?”
Well, yeah, said Brzezinski.
“It certainly appears they did,” she said.
