Walmart is pulling the Confederate flag from store shelves.
Walmart, the world’s leading retailer, is pulling all its Confederate flags – and Confederate flag-tied products, including t-shirts, license plates and belt buckles – in response to the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, that left nine dead.
“We never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer,” Walmart spokesman Brian Nick said in a statement to Quartz. “We have a process in place to help lead us to the right decisions when it comes to the merchandize we sell. Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly – this is one of those instances.”
Sears Holdings, the operators of Kmart and Sears, also announced its stores will no longer carry third party Confederate-themed items for sale. The outlets already don’t sell the flag products directly.
Fox News reported Amazon will keep selling Confederate flag items for sale.
Dylann Roof, the alleged killer in the Charleston church shootings, had posted photographs of himself with the Confederate flag, sparking another debate about the use of the banner to spread hate. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced this week the Capitol will no longer fly the flag.
The Confederate flag is a symbol of the southern states’ secession try from the union. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan have frequently used the flag to advance their own causes, however.
