Hackers hit the U.S. Army website.

A group tied to the Syrian Electronic Army claimed responsibility for hacking the U.S. Army’s official website.

The site is public and declassified; it was down most of Monday afternoon.

Screenshots taken of the hacked site that were posted on Twitter showed messages that were pro-President Bashar Assad, Fox News reported.

Army Brig. Gen. Malcolm Frost said in a statement: “Today, an element of the Army.mil service provider’s content was compromised. After this came to our attention, the Army took appropriate preventive measures to ensure there was no breach of Army data by taking down the website temporarily.”

The Syrian Electronic Army is a group of hackers that have previously targeted sites like the New York Times, CBS News, the Associated Press and the Washington Post. Part of its stated mission is to disrupt the online services of those sites that further the “fabricated” stories about Syria’s civil war, Fox News reported.
