Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is poised to sign two new bills expanding rights of individuals to carry guns into law – a stark contrast to the mantra and messages emanating from the White House in the days since the Charleston, South Carolina, church shootings of nine.
Walker’s signature on the separate measures, expected Wednesday, will remove the 48-hour waiting period for firearm purchasers, and give the legal right for off-duty and retired police officers to carry concealed weapons in the state’s public schools, the Washington Post reported.
The governor, who’s largely expected to jump into the presidential race, is going to sign the measures, Senate bills 35 and 70, at a public ceremony at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.
Walker said months ago the waiting period on firearms’ purchases is unnecessary, given technology that allows for instant checks.
The National Rifle Association gives Walker an A-plus on gun rights.
“Scott Walker is a battle-tested leader in the fight to preserve Second Amendment rights in Wisconsin,” said NRA political victory fund chairman Chris Cox in a statement during Walker’s reelection campaign last year, the Washington Post reported. “He’s never wavered, never backed down and never stood still in the fight to protect our freedoms.”
A spokesman for Walker said the signing ceremony was planned two weeks ago, before the shootings in Charleston occurred. Still, the laws come as President Obama has doubled down on his call for Second Amendment restrictions, based on his view such shootings as Charleston happen all too frequently in America and the public ought to take action.
The Wisconsin bills passed the Republican-dominated legislature in early June.
