President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden
President Obama is heading south on Friday to give the eulogy for slain Emanuel AME Church Rev. Clementa Pinckney – but it’s not clear if those remarks will mirror his previous statements about the Charleston shootings, which focused on gun control.
The White House confirmed the president’s eulogy, but declined to comment further, the Daily Mail reported.
Traveling with him will be Vice President Joe Biden, the Post and Courier reported.
Both Obama and Biden said in previous statements about the Charleston, South Carolina, church shootings they knew Pinckney, who also served in the state legislature.
“Michelle and I know several members of Emanuel AME Church,” Obama said, the day after the shootings, the Daily Mail reported. “We knew their pastor, Reverend Clementa Pinckney, who, along with eight others, gathered in prayer and fellowship and was murdered last night.”
Biden, meanwhile, called Pinckney a “good man, a man of faith, a man of service.”
The event would serve as a natural platform for the president and vice president to advance their gun-control policies.
The day after the shootings, Obama spoke bluntly about the need for America to do something to stop gun-related violence. As WND previously reported, his statement was considered inappropriate by some.
He said: “I’ve had to make statements like this too many times. We do know that, once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun. But let’s be clear: at some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the face that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency. And it is in our power to do something about it.”
