A New York Times’ story on Sen. Marco Rubio billed as an investigative piece backfired a bit after readers reacted to the big reveal – that the presidential candidate and his wife have had traffic tickets over the years – by donating more to the Floridian’s campaign.
The story, entitled “Rubios on the Road Have Drawn Unwanted Attention,” shows how Rubio has received four traffic tickets in 18 years – and his wife, 13 tickets since 1997. Mediaite mocked the report with a single word: “Rutt-Row.”
Even the Washington Post asked the New York Post’s media columnist for explanation about the investigative piece and received an email in reply: “The vote for president is the most personal vote that Americans cast. Voters want to know about these candidates – not just as policy-makers, but as people. It is not at all unusual or unexpected for us to scrutinize candidates’ backgrounds and their lives through public records. It is very standard scrubbing.”
But the assigning of two reporters to the story, Alan Rappeport and Steve Eder, is unusual, as is the scrutiny of Rubio’s wife, Mediaite reported. Moreover, the same newspaper failed to give President Obama similar treatment in 2007, when it went seemingly unnoticed – or at least unreported – by the media outlet he had 15 outstanding parking tickets in 2007 that spanned all the way back to the 1980s.
Rubio’s presidential campaign is using the report for fundraising via the hashtag #RubioCrimeSpree. The hashtag quickly moved into Twitter’s top trending spot, leading many political analysts to predict a sure rise in fundraising revenues for the candidate.
One Twitter user wrote: “#RubioCrimeSpree Once went through Publix express checkout lane with 11 items.”
Another: “Ordered an EggMcMuffin at 11:03 am #RubioCrimeSpree.”
Another: “If @marcorubio was a Dem, the @nytimes story on his driving would have speculated he was a victim of racial profiling. #RubioCrimeSpree.”
