Huckabee to Obama: ‘Punch back’ against China cyberattack

China’s hacking of the sensitive personal information of 4 million federal employees – the largest theft of government data in American history – requires a retaliatory strike, asserted former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.

In a statement provided exclusively to WND before further distribution, Huckabee noted Adm. Mike Rogers, director of the National Security Agency and commander of U.S. Cyber Command, testified to Congress in March that adversaries attack the United States with little fear of retaliation.

“What will it take for President Obama to open his eyes? The way you deal with a bully on the playground is to punch them in the face and put them on the ground because the only thing they respect is power,” said Huckabee.

Huckabee said China “attacked our government and hacked into the lives of four million Americans,” and the response is simple: “America should hack the Chinese government.”

“We should hack the cell phones of some prominent Communist party leaders, hack the bank accounts of intelligence officials, publicly humiliate Chinese families for political corruption, or wipe-out a few critical Chinese computer systems,” he said.

Mike Huckabee’s story, in his own words – “Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That’s Bringing Common Sense Back to America (Paperback)” – is available at the WND Superstore

Huckabee reasoned that when “you tolerate bad behavior and bullying, you get more of it.”

The hacking of the database of the Office of Personal Management, revealed June 4, took place in December. Beijing called U.S. accusations that China-based hackers were behind the attack unproven and irresponsible but has not denied responsibility.

Huckabee said that as president, he “will stand up to China, retaliate with strength, and never apologize for protecting Americans.”

“The fact that this administration wiretaps our ally, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cell phone, but sits back as the Chinese launch a cyber attack on four million Americans is mind-boggling,” he said. “If the Chinese attacked a military base or government facility, the U.S. would respond in-kind. A cyber attack against America is no different-we must retaliate proportionately and hack China back.”

On Sunday, two top-ranking House members also urged Obama to taken action in response to the security breach.

Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, and Republican Peter King of New York, a member of the House’s Homeland Security Committee and former chairman of the chamber’s Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, were interviewed on “Fox News Sunday.”

“We need to figure out when we’re going on an offensive,” Schiff said.

King declared: “We should not be afraid to use all of our tools to stop this.”

Michael Auslin, a policy analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, called the breach “yet more evidence that Beijing sees the U.S. as an adversary and is unworried about any response aggression will elicit from the White House.”

Auslin, writing for National Review’s blog The Corner, said it’s not the first time that Chinese sources have breached U.S. government sites.

He noted the Chinese have been charged with stealing information on almost every U.S. weapons program. He also pointed to the Mandiant report, issued in 2013, which revealed the People’s Liberation Army hacking corps had stolen terabytes of sensitive data from American companies over a period of years.

Cybersecurity experts told CNN last week the hack appears designed to build a vast database in what could be preparation for future attacks by China.

By revealing who has security clearances and at what level, the Chinese may now be able to identify, expose and blackmail U.S. government officials around the world, the experts told CNN.

In an op-ed piece for the Washington Times in January, Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said the cyberattack on major Hollywood figures carried out by North Korea showed “we have now reached a new era of cyberterrorism where threats cause just as much damage and fear as a bomb threat.”
