‘Final’ report to Congress on Lois Lerner could come by end of June

The Lois Lerner saga may soon be coming to an official, if unsatisfying, end.

The office of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) indicated this week that a final report on the IRS-Tea Party political discrimination scandal could come by the end of June.

Lerner, the former IRS official who originally leaked the scandal to buffer herself from the negative consequences of its inevitable discovery, was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to continue her testimony concerning the affair. She left the IRS in the fall of 2013, five months after revealing the scandal by answering a planted question about the agency’s discriminatory practices at a speaking engagement.

While the TIGTA report will put the matter back in Congress’ hands, it’s uncertain whether it will arm lawmakers with enough new information to rejuvenate their stalled investigation into the scandal — or whether they’ll have the appetite to follow through on any new information that does emerge.

Much of the TIGTA investigation has focused on tracking down the missing emails that Lerner claimed had been lost from her computer’s hard drive following a malfunction that, she said, erased key communications pertaining to the scandal. Republican critics have insinuated that the “missing” emails could include communication that links Lerner’s Exempt Organizations division with a political operator — presumably a party that gave instructions on which conservative nonprofit organizations to target.

According to The Hill, TIGTA inspector J. Russell George told the Senate Finance Committee the investigation had conducted “more than 150 interviews” in its effort to locate Lerner’s missing emails.
