Vermont Sen. and presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders’ economic ideas may give you nightmares about a future Socialist States of America. But even if his economic message gives you stomach knots, at least you can be sure he won’t come for your guns in the unlikely event he earns the keys to the White House.
In a recent National Public Radio interview, Sanders left no doubt that he disagrees with the Democratic Party on gun control, saying that the left’s anti-2nd Amendment crusade is largely the product of urban politicians failing to understand rural America.
“I think guns and gun control is an issue that needs to be discussed,” he told NPR’s “Morning Edition.” “Let me add to that, I think that urban America has got to respect what rural America is about, where 99 percent of the people in my state who hunt are law abiding people.”
According to Sanders, his Democratic contemporaries are “terribly mistaken” if they believe gun control can end gun violence.
“Obviously, we need strong, sensible gun control and I will support it. But some people think it’s going to solve all of our problems. It is not,” he said.
The keyword for Sanders when it comes to gun policies he would support, however, is “sensible.”
“I can understand that if some Democrats or Republicans represent an urban area where people don’t hunt, don’t do target practice; they’re not into guns. But, in my state, people go hunting and people do target practice,” he said. “Talking about cultural divides in this country, you know, it is important for people in urban America to understand that families go out together and kids go out with their parents and they hunt and they enjoy the outdoors and that is a lifestyle that should not be condemned.”
