Amazon – in what may actually prove a brilliant business strategy – announced it would no longer sell the Confederate flag online. And shortly after, sales skyrocketed.
In the hours after its announcement, sales jumped more than 5,400 percent, the Hill reported.
Amazon’s announcement follows similar ones from eBay, Walmart and Sears. NASCAR, too, joined the crowd of anti-Confederate flaggers, releasing a statement of support for South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who just called for the banner to be taken down from the Capitol building.
“As we continue to mourn the tragic loss of life last week in Charleston, we join our nation’s embrace of those impacted,” NASCAR said in a statement, Mediaite reported. “NASCAR supports the position that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley took on the Confederate flag on Monday. … NASCAR will continue our long-standing policy to disallow the use of the Confederate flag symbol in any official BASCAR capacity. While NASCAR recognizes that freedom of expression is an inherent right of all citizens, we will continue to strive for an inclusive environment at our events.”
NASCAR has stated previously the presence of the Confederate flag at any of its sporting events has never been endorsed by the company. Its recent announcement doesn’t actually change policy, but rather underscores existing views.
