Republican lawmaker comes out for Hillary

New York Rep. Richard Hanna on Tuesday endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, making him the first congressional Republican to officially reject his party’s nominee.

Hanna called GOP nominee Donald Trump “profoundly offensive and narcissistic” and “a world-class panderer” before declaring:

“In his latest foray of insults, Mr. Trump has attacked the parents of a slain U.S. soldier. Where do we draw the line? I thought it would have been when he alleged that U.S. Sen. John McCain was not a war hero because he was caught. Or the countless other insults he’s proudly lobbed from behind the Republican presidential podium. For me, it is not enough to simply denounce his comments: He is unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country.”

For Hanna, who plans to retire at the end of the current Congress, endorsing Clinton comes without the fear of voter backlash.

But with a growing list of Republicans who are more likely to go on record denouncing something Trump has said than endorse him, the New York lawmaker likely won’t be the last elected member of the GOP to publicly support Clinton.

Already this week, GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) have released statements distancing themselves from Trump after his remarks about Ghazala and Khizr Khan, the Muslim parents of a U.S. soldier who died serving in Iraq.

President Barack Obama has also weighed in, using Trump’s remarks about the Khans as an opportunity to shame Republicans into withdrawing support for their party nominee.

“If you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him?” Obama said during a press conference at the White House Tuesday.

“There has to come a point at which you say, ’enough.’”

Obama added that, while he felt his opponents in the 2008 and 2012 got some policy issues wrong, “I never thought that they couldn’t do the job.”

“But that’s not the situation here, and that’s not just my opinion,” he continued. “That is the opinion of many prominent Republicans.”
