In her “exit interview” with Oprah Winfrey, first lady Michelle Obama said she believes her husband delivered on his promise to bring “hope” to America. The Trump administration, she went on to suggest, will likely undo the progress.
“We feel the difference now. See, now, we are feeling what not having hope feels like,” Obama said. “Hope is necessary. It’s a necessary concept and Barack didn’t just talk about hope because he thought it was just a nice slogan to get votes.”
“He and I and so many believe that — what else do you have if you don’t have hope,” the first lady added. “What do you give your kids if you can’t give them hope?”
It’s not clear exactly who Obama is speaking for when she says Americans feel totally hopeless, but she certainly isn’t addressing the U.S. business community which is currently experiencing a massive surge in confidence.
Obama suggested one reason for the alleged hopelessness is that Trump lacks the emotional maturity lead the nation through tough times.
“I feel Barack has been that for the nation in ways that people will come to appreciate. Having a grown-up in the White House who can say to you in times of crisis and turmoil, ‘Hey, it’s going to be okay. Let’s remember the good things that we have,’” she said.
Trump, during a speaking event in Saturday, brushed off Obama’s comments.
“I’m telling you, we have tremendous hope. And we have tremendous promise and tremendous potential. We are going to be so successful as a country again. We are going to be amazing,” Trump said at a Mobile, Alabama, rally.
