Saying that GOP nominee Donald Trump “understands and supports” the priorities of its members, the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) officially endorsed the Republican for president.
“[Trump] has seriously looked at the issues facing law enforcement today. He understands and supports our priorities and our members believe he will make America safe again,” said Chuck Canterbury, the FOP’s national president.
“He’s made a real commitment to America’s law enforcement and we’re proud to make a commitment to him and his campaign by endorsing his candidacy today.”
In the wake of high-profile protests against U.S. police, Trump has made a dedication to law and order a central part of his presidential campaign.
Back in August, Trump told the members of a North Carolina FOP chapter: “I’m on your side 1,000 percent. What you do is incredible.”
In the 2012 election, the police union didn’t back any candidate in the general election after backing GOP hopeful John McCain through the primary season.
The FOP was angered by Clinton’s refusal to fill out a questionnaire the police union sends to candidates seeking its endorsement.
“Obviously this is an unusual election. We have a candidate who declined to seek an endorsement and a candidate without any record as an elected official,” Canterbury said in a statement.
Oddly enough, the last time the group backed a Democrat in a presidential general election it threw its weight behind the current Democratic hopeful’s husband, President Bill Clinton.
