Republican group: The Johnson/Weld ticket is the most sensible choice

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson and his running mate Bill Weld appear to be gaining traction in convincing voters there’s never been a better time for an attack on two-party presidential politics.

The biggest problem Johnson and Weld have is getting the media to take them seriously. But many Americans who saw it were surprised by the Libertarian duo’s performance during a CNN town hall event Wednesday. If you didn’t watch it, do so now:

If they can continue to muster the press coverage and slowly build the polling support needed to earn them a spot on the general election debate stage, they’ll become a nightmare for both Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.

One of the biggest reasons behind the massive threat Johnson and Weld pose to the political establishment is that, as Libertarians go, both men are extremely moderate.

A new group called Republicans for Johnson Weld 2016 is working overtime to emphasize that point.

Liz Mair, a highly-regarded Republican strategist who supports the group, noted that disgust with both mainstream candidates from members of their own parties could be a significant aid to the Johnson/Weld effort.

“I have long said that I can support neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton, on the grounds that neither sufficiently shares my philosophical principles, on the basis that I consider it highly likely that one or both will end up wearing an orange jumpsuit sooner or later, and because both present very serious risks to our national security,” said Mair. “The Johnson-Weld ticket offers the opportunity to vote for people who more closely share my and most Americans’ views on core areas of policy, and to vote for two experienced governors free of the ethical and legal issues plaguing Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.”

Mair describes Johnson as a “small-l libertarian,” meaning his positions are more in line with the more libertarian Republican Party of decades ago.

And she’s right.

As Weld noted Wednesday: “We don’t think you have to be all one thing or all the other. And we think we’re right in the middle because we’re this mix of … views.”

Republicans for Johnson Weld 2016 wants to serve as a remedy for the trend of establishment Republicans beginning to line up behind Clinton because of the party’s growing tension with the Trump camp.

They also note that Johnson and Weld would likely do serious harm to the Clinton campaign thanks to the Libertarian Party’s longtime advocacy for liberal social policies.
