House Speaker Paul Ryan, left, is being challenged in the Aug. 9 Wisconsin primary by businessman Paul Nehlen, right.
Amnesty for illegal aliens and open borders are the biggest issues facing America in this election and there are those in key leadership positions in Washington – like House Speaker Paul Ryan – who have been supporting those ideas when they should have been opposing them, according to one of America’s conservative icons, Phyllis Schlafly.
And they should go.
“I do believe that immigration is the No. 1 issue this year. Look at our friends in Europe. See what’s happened to them,” Schlafly told WND on Wednesday. Her Eagle Forum organization is considered one of the more influential in American conservatism, and she has been an active player since she, nearly single-handedly, took on the then-proposed Equal Rights Amendment and generated enough opposition to send the plan down in flames.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, facing a primary opponent in his race for re-election this year, is one of those who should be moving on, she said.
“He’s been supporting immigration. At least he hasn’t been opposing it,” she said. “And yes, there are others.”
She declined, however, to name those.
But she said Ryan “has let us down in not fighting immigration.”
Referencing the problems that Germany is facing over a mass influx of Muslim refugees, she said, “I thought the Germans were tough people. But they’re not able to cope with the hordes of immigrants who are coming in.”
Even if American politicians don’t see immigration as significant, American people do, she said.
“It’s clear from the primary election of [GOP candidate Donald] Trump that the American people are upset about immigration,” she said.
In an earlier interview with Breitbart, she was blunt in her opinion that Ryan has shown he is “not for the American citizens.”
“Get rid of him! We don’t want anybody who believes in open borders,” she said. “Obviously Paul Ryan is not an ‘America first’ guy.”
WND reported earlier during this election cycle when Schlafly unloaded on then-presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio.
He was gone from the race a short time later.
She noted that she supported Rubio when he was a plucky challenger for the open Senate seat in Florida.
“When Marco Rubio ran for the Senate in Florida, I think I was the first one to endorse him,” Schlafly told WND earlier. “I made a trip down to Florida in 2009 just for the purpose of helping him.”
But Schlafly, a legendary conservative activist, author and WND columnist, said she ended up bitterly disappointed by Rubio.
“Once he got elected, he betrayed us all,” she told WND. “He said he was against amnesty and against the establishment. And once he got in, right away, he became an agent of the establishment. And now, of course, he’s big for amnesty and letting all the illegal immigrants in. He betrayed us a number of times on that issue.”
Eventually, Rubio co-sponsored the “Gang of 8” immigration amnesty bill, partnering with Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to allow a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and dramatically increase legal immigration. Rubio was also identified by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., as the person designated to “neutralize” and “proselytize” conservative opposition.
At the time, Schlafly urged conservatives not to underestimate the importance of the immigration issue.
“Immigration right now is the biggest issue. All you need to do is look at Europe, and you can see that,” she said.
The presence of Ryan in his key leadership post at the head of the U.S. House of Representatives suddenly has become an issue over his general agreement with Barack Obama on a number of issues over recent months.
He’s supported a number of “globalist” policies, the Trans Pacific Partnership, much government spending, diversity campaigns, and more, and Schlafly, who has been active in politics since before the current president was born – she attended her first Republican National Convention in 1952 – was not willing to overlook Ryan’s multiple statements undermining the GOP’s nominee, Donald Trump.
His primary opponent, Paul Nehlen, also has accused him of betraying the party.
Phyllis Schlafly
It was on WND earlier when Schlafly praised Trump as “the last hope for America.”
In a subsequent email from his campaign, Trump then wrote: “I wanted to share the article below written by highly respected conservative, Phyllis Schlafly. Phyllis’ support is a testament to my message to Make America Great Again and your enthusiasm to ensure our country is better than it has ever been before.
“Phyllis stated that I am ‘the only one who will fight’ and it’s true. I will fight harder than anyone. This country has been so great to me and I want to do something really special in return. We are going to rebuild the American Dream and make it bigger and better and stronger than ever before for each and every one of you.”
In Schlafly’s interview at the time, she harshly criticized the Republican Congress for passing the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill.
“I think the people are going to react by electing Donald Trump,” she offered. “It sounds like Donald Trump is the only one who has any fight in him. He will fight for the issues that we really care about and are very hot at the present time, such as the immigration issue. I don’t see anyone else who’s eager to fight.”
Asked if Trump is the last hope for America, Schlafly responded: “He does look like he’s the last hope. We don’t hear anybody saying what he’s saying. In fact, most of the people who ought to be lining up with him are attacking him. They’re probably jealous of the amount of press coverage he gets. But the reason he gets so much press coverage is the grassroots are fed up with people who are running things, and they do want a change. They do want people to stand up for America. It really resonates when he says he wants to ‘Make America Great Again.’”
