Legalization advocates say a bevy of state pro-pot measures may force federal reforms

As several states consider legislative changes that would liberalize marijuana laws, pot proponents say the nation is quickly reaching the point at which the federal government will be forced to end its longstanding prohibition of the drug.

Over the past for years, marijuana has become legal for recreational use in Washington, Colorado, Alaska, Oregon and the District of Columbia. By the end of this year, voters in five other states—California, Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada— could similarly legalize recreational pot use. Meanwhile, voters in Arkansas, Florida, Montana and Missouri will have the opportunity to allow medical marijuana sales in their respective states.

“This is really a watershed year for marijuana legalization, so I’m hoping that we’ll see some big changes in November,” F. Aaron Smith, co-founder and executive director of the National Cannabis Industry Association, said in an interview with CNN.

Recreational legalization in California, Smith contends, will have the most significant impact on broader changes to marijuana laws.

“California really is the linchpin for hemispheral legalization,” said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML.

According to a recent YouGov poll, a majority of Americans are in favor of taking marijuana off the list of things that can get you in trouble with the law. Sixty-five percent of respondents said “government efforts to enforce marijuana laws cost more than they are worth” and 55 percent favor outright legalization.
