Warning issued against ‘feel good’ gun restrictions

Shotgun shells

A coalition of constitutional rights organizations has released an open letter warning against the adoption of “feel good” gun restrictions, promising to “vigilantly defend our freedom” as Democrats and others put the blame for the Muslim terror attack in Orlando, Florida, on the weapon the attacker used and try to install more limits on the Second Amendment.

“We will be prepared, we will train, we will be ready, and we will vigilantly defend our freedom,” the letter says. “We call upon gun bloggers, activists, trainers, members of the firearms industry, gun owners, and anyone who enjoys freedom, to support rolling back restrictions on responsible gun owners and opposing attempts to pass ineffective, ‘feel good,’ gun restrictions.”

The letter was signed by a long list of rights groups including Grass Roots North Carolina, Open Carry Texas, Gun Owners Of Maine, Oklahoma Second Amendment Organization, Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, Western Missouri Shooters Alliance, Arizona Citizens Defense League and other groups from Virginia, Vermont, Florida, Nebraska and Illinois.

The letter comes in the wake of numerous moves to further infringe the Second Amendment on the grounds that an Islamic terrorist wouldn’t have terrorized an Orlando nightclub and killed 49, or injured dozens more, with the proper gun restrictions in place.

Those moves are being reported all over. The New York Times said how House Democrats held some 40 events “across the country” trying to capitalize politically on their “25-hour sit-in on the [House] chamber floor last week.”

That body so far has refused to line up more fences for the Second Amendment, just as it did after the 2012 shooting at the Sandy Hook grade school where dozens were killed.

“Democrats are hopeful that the confluence of terrorism and guns in the recent Orlando shooting has been enough to draw a few more Republicans to their side. Last week eight Senate Republicans joined Democrats in keeping alive a ‘no fly, no buy’ bill introduced by Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine,” the Times said.

The Los Angeles Times wrote how the Democrats spent a day preventing U.S. House action by sitting on the floor, “shouting demands for votes on new [gun] laws.”

The report said, “Republican leaders labeled the sit-in a stunt, especially after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent half dozen emails to supporters asking for donations while Democrats occupied the floor. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said this week that Republicans won’t tolerate another sit-in.”

The New York publication eventually concluded that neither bipartisan plans nor the sit-in “is very likely to lead to any legislative action in Congress on gun safety this year.”

Even at the state level, where Democrats also are demanding more limits, there is resistance.

In Florida, where the Orlando shooting happened, legislators called for a special session to adopt gun laws.

Gov. Rick Scott declined.

“We have to remember who the enemy is here. The enemy is ISIS. The enemy is radical Islam, the enemy is evil,” Scott said.

He explained, “The Second Amendment didn’t kill anybody. … Why aren’t we focused on the culprit, the evil here? It’s ISIS. It’s radical Islam.”

The open letter was signed by USRKBA.org, Oregon Firearms Federation, S.C.O.P.E., Grass Roots North Carolina, Open Carry Texas, Gun Owners Of Maine, Oklahoma Second Amendment Org., Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, Western Missouri Shooters Alliance, Missourians For Personal Safety, Firearm Owners Against Crime, Arizona Citizens Defense League, Texas Carry, ICarry Illinois, Gadsden Guns Inc., Florida Carry, The Firearms Coalition, Gun Owners of Vermont, Peaceable Texans for Firearm Rights, Virginia Citizens Defense League and Nebraska Firearm Owners Association.

In the wake of the Orlando terror attack, even components of the National Rifle Association were supporting a “no-gun” list for people who come to the attention of authorities.

But it would have “no provisions for due process, no removal from the secret list, and no criminal penalties for abuse,” the coalition’s letter said.

“Secret list abuse, as the recent IRS scandals have shown, is all too common in the U.S. government. NRA-ILA leadership also endorsed, on national television, the unsafe notion that bars and ‘night clubs’ should be gun free,” the letter said.

“Grass roots gun owners reject secret no guns lists, and reject support of so-called ‘gun free zones,’ and we call on NRA-ILA to abandon support for these proposals and return to supporting the 2nd Amendment, gun owners, and the right to self defense. We urge the NRA-ILA to work toward enhancing concealed carry reciprocity, among the states, and eliminating so-called ‘gun free zones.’”

The group said unacceptable would be those “gun free zones.”

“They are exactly what terrorists want: a target-rich environment with no one who can mount an effective defense.”

Gun Owners of America said there are things that “liberals” don’t want America to know about guns.

“Background checks do not stop high profile attackers – Although gun grabbers relentlessly push background checks as the solution to stopping high profile attacks on innocent Americans, the facts are that background checks do not hinder high profile attackers in the least. Alleged Orlando attacker Omar Mateen passed a background check for his guns, as did UCLA gunman Mainak Sarkar and almost every high profile attacker in the past 10 years,” the group said.

Further, “More people are killed with clubs [and] hammers than rifles,” and more children under 10 are killed by fire and drowning that accidental gun shots, it revealed.

Also, guns are legally used for self-defense some 760,000 annually in America.

But it concurred that “gun-free zones are killing fields.”

“The Orlando terror attack to place in gun-free zone. Result? Approximately 50 dead. The attack in the Umpqua Community College gun-free zone (October 2015) left 9 dead, the attack on the gun-free Chattanooga military offices (July 2015) left five dead, the attack in Fort Hood’s gun-free zone (April 2014) left 3 dead, the earlier attack in Fort Hood’s gun-free zone (November 2009) killed 13, the attack in the gun-free DC Navy Yard (September 2013) killed 12, the attack on gun-free Sandy Hook Elementary (December 2012) killed 26, the attack in the gun-free Aurora movie theater (July 2012) killed 12, and the attack on the gun-free Virginia Tech campus (April 2007) killed 32. Think about it–Eight gun-free zones, 207 firearm-related deaths.”
