A suicide bomber killed only himself during a Monday morning attack near the U.S. consulate in Saudi Arabia’s city of Jeddah by the Red Sea, authorities reported.
Security officers patrolling the area said they were suspicious of a man who was walking in the parking lot of a hospital located directly across the street from the U.S. diplomatic building, and approached him for questioning, Agence France-Presse reported.
That’s when “he blew himself up with a suicide belt inside the hospital parking” lot, Saudi’s interior ministry reported.
Nobody else was killed in the attack, which took place 30 feet from the wall of the consulate, CNN reported. Witnesses said a couple of police officers appeared to have been injured, though, and local media reported two law enforcement officials had been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The local online news site Sabq showed a photograph of the bomber’s body on the ground by a taxi and another car, which was covered in holes from the shrapnel.
The bombing occurred right after dawn prayers as Muslims were entering their fast period for the holy month of Ramadan, AFP said.
A U.S. State Department official responded and said: “We are aware of reports of an explosion in Jeddah and [are] working with Saudi authorities to collect more information. We can confirm that all personnel under chief-of-mission authority are accounted for at this time.”
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Saudi Arabian authorities have fielded periodic attacks since 2014 from ISIS.
