President Barack Obama’s White House has given the Environmental Protection Agency unprecedented power to overstep the Constitution and states’ rights. And EPA regulators certainly haven’t squandered the opportunity to legislate via fiat.
During a House Subcommittee on Energy and Power hearing this week, lawmakers learned that the Obama EPA has created 3,900 new environmental rules. Averaging about 500 new EPA rules for each year of his presidency, Obama has added around 33,000 pages of additions to the Federal Register.
Chairman of the Subcommittee Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) said the EPA’s massive red tape expansion was the result of the administration’s “controversial and extreme interpretation” of the environmental agency’s authority to create legislation without congressional input.
Whitfield said the EPA is now the nation’s “ultimate” regulator.
Ohio Republican Bill Johnson noted that the EPA’s massive regulatory push is having a profound impact on the economic situations of millions of American businesses: “The rules are complicated. The regulations that you guys are putting out are complicated. It’s draining the lifeblood out of our businesses…The money that’s coming out [of the economy] in federal regulations, particularly from the EPA, is like a dadgum permission slip to do business in America.”
Cumulative compliance costs for Obama’s EPA regulations are in the range of hundreds of billions of dollars and “have grown by more than $50 billion in annual costs since 2009,” the lawmakers noted.
