A Kardashian family trip to Cuba to tape the latest “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” season show has raised the hackles of at least one Republican on Capitol Hill, who described the travels as a foolhardy extension of the “vapid” television production that’s been running on E! for some years.
“I know it’s cool for celebrities to go to Cuba,” said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, in a statement to People. “But the Cuban people don’t experience the glamorous Havana that is featured on social media. Far from photo shoots and fruity drinks, everyday Cubans experience a different, sad reality.”
People reported the Kardashian family, including sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, are heading to Cuba for several tapings of their long-running reality show. Khloe Kardashian broadcast news of their travels via an Instagram photo posted this week that featured her smoking a cigar in Havana with her two sisters and a friend, Malika Haqq.
The caption beneath the photo read: “Pablo was here! Cuba.”
Ros-Lehtinen said the photo and Kardashian downplay of the plight of Cubans was mocking.
“Now, the Kardashians are parachuting into the island to tape their vapid TV show,” she said. “Haven’t the Cuban people suffered enough?”
She also tweeted: “#Kardashians headed to #Cuba. How much of the #Cuban ppl’s reality will be in this ‘reality’ show?”
Obama opened doors to normalized relations with Cuba last year, saying it’s well past time to bury the Cold War hatchet that’s marked American relations with the island’s government, and to move into more diplomatic relations that include business dealings and trade.
