Jimmy Carter: Trump tapping into ‘inherent racism’

Former president Jimmy Carter added his two cents to the campaign mantra surrounding presumptive Republican Party nominee Donald Trump, throwing out the race card and suggesting the reason the billionaire businessman was doing so well is that he’s managed to tap into what he described as the swell of racism that courses throughout America.

In an interview with the New York Times, Carter said: “[Trump’s] tapped a waiting reservoir there of inherent racism.”

Carter, who’s hosting a summit in Atlanta this fall to bring together people of different races as a sort of Baptist reach across all demographics, said the country is far from achieving racial parity.

“I don’t feel good except for one thing,” he said, the Hill reported. “I think the country has been reawakened the last two or three years to the face that we haven’t resolved the race issue adequately.”

Carter also said Trump is just one example of the GOP’s “racial” animosity toward President Obama.

“I think there’s a heavy reaction among some of the racially conscious Republicans against an African-American being president,” he said.

Carter took especial offense with Trump’s call to temporarily halt Muslims from entering the United States, something the campaign called for as a temporary fix to let federal officials better protect America from security risks.

“When you single out any particular group of people for secondary citizenship status,” Carter said, “that’s a violation of basic human rights.”
