Edward Nero
Edward Nero, one of six Baltimore police officers indicted in the death of Freddie Gray, was acquitted of all charges Monday, leading Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to call for members of the community to keep calm and remain patient.
Nero, 30, had been charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct, all while helping his fellow officers arrest Gray in April, 2015. Gray died shortly after the arrest, due in part to injuries suffered during his police transport.
Riots and demonstrations tore at the city for days after Gray’s death.
Nero chose a court hearing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams, rather than face a jury trial. And Williams found during his ruling released Monday the prosecutors didn’t show Nero had acted unreasonably during the arrest, and besides, that he wasn’t even the police officer who had cuffed Gray.
Nero hugged his attorneys after hearing the judge’s ruling, but protesters outside the courtroom chanted, “No justice, no peace,” the New York Post reported.
One called the ruling “a complete slap in the face to blacks in America,” while Rawlings-Blake appealed for peace.
“We once again ask the citizens to be patient and to allow the entire process to come to a conclusion.” she said, on Twitter. “We will protect our neighborhoods, our businesses and the people of our city.”
