Will GOP elites defy will of the electorate with a ‘fresh face’?

The GOP establishment is hinting that Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and John Kasich supporters are all going to be equally disappointed when the party’s convention gets underway this summer. Talk of a nominee other than someone currently in the GOP primary race is increasing.

Late last month, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) told a newspaper in his home state that he expects the GOP primary to conclude with the Republican Party nominating a candidate who isn’t currently in the race.

His prediction is based on the chance that delegates will be heading into an open convention in July.

“I think if it’s an open convention, it’s very likely it would be someone who’s not currently running,” Walker said.

Walker made the comments ahead of the Wisconsin primary, which polls are predicting Ted Cruz will win further endangering Trump’s chances of heading into the convention with an unassailable delegate lead.

The Wisconsin governor also, however, noted that the current election is one of the most unpredictable in decades.

“I mean, who knows. The one thing I qualify — it’s like the qualifications you see on those ads you see for car dealerships. I think any of us who comment on this election have to qualify that almost every prediction’s been off, so it’s hard to predict anything,” Walker said.

Meanwhile, other election watchers are openly hoping that a brokered convention ends with the nomination of a candidate more favorable to the GOP establishment.

Longtime friend of the Bush political dynasty Karl Rove said last week that he hopes a “fresh face” will emerge from the Republican convention.

He said: “If we have somebody who we think has been battle tested, and has strong conservative principles and the ability to articulate them, and they are nominated at this convention, there will be a lot of acrimony from the people who were seeking the nomination.

“But if it’s somebody who has those convictions that they can express in a compelling way, we could come out of the convention in relatively strong position.”
