Trump Lewandowski sued for defamation by GOP operative

A Republican political strategist, Cheri Jacobus, filed a lawsuit against GOP presidential primary front-runner Donald Trump and his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski for $4 million, seeking damages plus punitive fees for alleged defamation.

The charges stem from remarks Trump and Lewandowski made earlier this year that Jacobus said wrongfully painted her as a grudge holder. In January and February, both Lewandowski and Trump tried to dismiss criticisms Jacobus made of the billionaire’s debate performances – when she said he “comes off like a third grader faking his way through an oral report on current affairs” – as due to her anger at being turned down for a job with the campaign.

Lewandowski told “Morning Joe” hosts on MSNBC that Jacobus “came to the office on multiple occasions trying to get a job from the Trump campaign, and she wasn’t hired [and] clearly she went off and was upset by that,” Politico reported.

Then, on February 2, Jacobus appeared on CNN and criticized Trump’s remarks about his failure to receive proper credit for self-funding his campaign – and Trump later tweeted: “@cherijacobus begged us for a job. We said no and she went hostile. A real dummy!”

Jacobus then hired an attorney to send a cease and desist letter to Lewandowski and Trump. And Trump’s response?

He took to Twitter once again and wrote: “Really dumb @CheriJacobus. Begged my people for a job. Turned her down twice and she went hostile. Major loser, zero credibility!”

Jacobus, however, said it was the Trump campaign who approached her about work, through a former aide, Jim Dornan. Jacobus also said she met twice with Lewandowski but never came aboard the campaign.

Jacobus, in her court documents, said she didn’t want the job due in part to Lewandowski’s “boorish behavior,” Politico reported.

She said in her suit she was wrongfully painted as embittered and said it was the campaign that held a grudge against her for giving information to a Washington Post reporter about the Trump Make America Great Again super PAC.

“While libel suits are generally difficult to prove, in this matter it is indisputable that the statements of Trump and his agents which are the subject of this lawsuit are defamatory,” said Jay Butterman, the attorney for Jacobus, Politico reported. “Donald Trump far exceeded the legitimate bounds of free expression in his false attacks on Ms. Jacobus. He should be held accountable for his actions. We have no doubt that the defendants will hurl a host of technical objections at this filing, but we are confident that the complaint has already addressed the technical hurdles often confronting the victims of defamation.”

The suit comes just after a judge in Florida dismissed misdemeanor assault charges brought by former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields against Lewandowski.
