Sen. Marco Rubio
Sen. Marco Rubio, who’s been struggling to move up in the Republican primary polls, warded off attacks that painted him as intolerable to law enforcement by suggesting the criticisms came from the head of a union with a political agenda.
The backstory is this: Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council president Chris Crane, who also served as an ICE officer for 13 years, as well as a U.S. military member, said Rubio treated law enforcement “like absolute trash” while pressing the Gang of Eight amnesty bill in the Senate, ostensibly because he wasn’t as receptive to their queries as they would have liked, Breitbart reported.
And Rubio, in response to the criticisms, took to Fox News and said: “He’s not an ICE official. He’s the head of a union.”
Breitbart, however, reported Crane is “an ICE officer in good standing” and simultaneously the president of the council that represents roughly 5,800 ICE officers. The news outlet also reported Crane had expressed several concerns to Rubio with the Gang of Eight legislation while it was still under consideration in the Senate, but those changes were not made.
Now, a handful of sheriffs from around the country have come forward to support Crane.
One, Paul Babeu of Pinal County, Arizona, told Breitbart: “ICE officer Chris Crane is as much a real federal law enforcement officer as Marco Rubio is a real U.S. senator. … Officer Crane has helped expose the failures of ICE and President Obama to enforce immigration laws that have compromised the safety of our nation. I’m proud of his service to our nation and courage to tell the truth amidst attacks.”
Another, Sheriff Tom Hodgson of Bristol County, Massachusetts, said similarly, Breitbart reported: ‘I’m not sure what Senator Rubio is talking about … Anyone who has worked on the immigration issue knows that Crane is a federal ICE agent … I’m really surprised by Rubio’s comment. He knows very well who Chris Crane is. He met with law enforcement at some point [during Gang of Eight discussions] when we were telling him that had the wrong position on this issue.”
Sheriff Sam Page of Rockingham County, North Carolina, meanwhile, told Breitbart he actually traveled to Washington, D.C., for a meeting with Crane and Rubio and “my interpretation was that we were there to help improve the bill, but we never heard anything back from Senator Rubio after that meeting.”
