Massachusetts gun grabber wants to start a national ‘revolution’ to eradicate semi-autos

Supporters are calling a local proposal to ban, confiscate and destroy all semi-automatic weapons in Lexington, Massachusetts, “the first shot” in kicking off a national revolution against 2nd Amendment rights.

The plan, hatched by a Harvard professor named Robert Rotberg who is one of 200 “town meeting members” who represent residents of the town, is similar in nature to regulations enacted in Highland Park, Illinois, in 2013.

It would, among other things, ban the sale and possession of any semi-automatic firearm capable of holding more than 10 rounds in addition to any magazine with a capacity exceeding the 10-round limit.

It would force people in the area who currently legally own the firearms and equipment covered under the ban to either sell the weapons or turn them over to local authorities to be destroyed.

“Just as we fired the first shot to start the revolution, this might be the first shot – no pun intended – to start a movement against assault weapons that would capture the state and therefore maybe explode to reach the country,” Rotberg said of the proposal.

And, unfortunately, Rotberg may be right.

Late last year in a 7-2 vote, the Supreme Court refused to review rulings made by Chicago judges who upheld the Highland Park regulations following a 2nd Amendment challenge. Justices Clarence Thomas and the late Antonin Scalia dissented.

The move, though not a formal ruling, suggests the court’s majority believes semi-automatic firearms are up for debate with regard to protection under the 2nd Amendment.

And as Thomas noted in his dissent, that leaves the door open for an incremental gutting of the right to bear arms.

The lower courts, he said, had given a seal of approval for “categorical bans on firearms that millions of Americans commonly own for lawful purposes.” He continued, warning, “If broad bans on firearms can be upheld based on the conjecture that the public might feel safer (while being no safer at all), then the 2nd Amendment guarantees nothing.”

Lexington residents will have a public discussion about whether to move forward with the anti-2nd Amendment proposal on March 21. If it passes there, your community could be next.
