Gov. Chris Christie, who just won high praise for his blunt presidential debate attack on Sen. Marco Rubio, caused a bit of social media swirl with a photograph that captured him stepping toward Democrat Hillary Clinton, arms stretched wide, poised to give what appeared to be a big bear hug.
The reach-out, to those on the Republican side, reminds of Christie’s widely criticized hug of President Obama while the two reviewed the damage done by Hurricane Sandy to New Jersey’s shoreline in 2012. Even years later, Christie was forced to defend his hug.
On the Laura Ingraham show in April 2015, Christie explained that hug, NJ.com reported: “I was doing my job. The president came to offer help. If they expected me to play politics and dump on the president, I wasn’t going to do it.”
Christie, who’s been an outspoken critic of Clinton, now faces a similar set of questions over his photo with Clinton.
As one Twitter user wrote, beneath the photo of his reach-out: “@ChrisChristie sure does like to give hug love to some odd people. Here he is getting some sugar from Hillary.”
The Daily Caller said the photo was posted by a Rubio supporter as the two candidates, Christie and Clinton, met on the stage at a recent CNN “State of the Union” appearance. As the news outlet reported, Christie’s friendly greeting came in contrast to what his campaign tweeted about the meeting, in the hours of its leadup, promising a “tension-filled foreshadowing of what to expect” from a presidential race between Christie and Clinton.
