An attendee at a campaign fundraiser for Burr’s re-election told the Associated Press that self-described socialist Bernie Sanders would receive the senator’s vote over Cruz. The individual, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Burr was not joking when he made the remark.
Burr demanded a retraction after the story broke, but the news agency stood behind its story.
“As we have told Sen. Burr’s campaign, we stand by our story,” said Paul Colford, AP’s vice president and director of media relations, the Charlotte Observer reported.
Burr then took to Twitter to say, “I will support whoever the GOP nominee is. @AP is trying to create discord where there isn’t discord by telling lies,” Burr tweeted Thursday.

AP’s story is not likely to phase Cruz, who embraces stories that distance him from his colleagues in the nation’s capital.
Republicans questioned for the story worried that Cruz would fail to attract independent voters like Trump in the general election. They added that a Cruz administration would have a tough time dealing with Congress.
“He’s a very rock-ribbed conservative and very intelligent young man, very knowledgeable, put it that way,” Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said. “And I haven’t seen any great desire on his part to really bring the party along with him so that’s something that worries me. … I think it would help him a lot if he would learn how other people feel and work with other people a little bit better, and I think that naturally will occur.”
GOP Rep. Pete King of New York called Cruz a “fraud” and added, ” I don’t know of anyone else in Washington, certainly, who gets this opposition from his own people. … I’m talking about people as conservative as he is who just can’t stand him,” AP reported.

Bob Dole, former senator and failed presidential hopeful, jabbed Cruz on Wednesday in an interview with the New York Times.
“I don’t know how he’s going to deal with Congress,” Dole said. “Nobody likes him.”
Cruz’s campaign took Dole’s attack in stride.
“Establishment Icon Dole Endorses Trump Over Cruz […] Are the Trump supporters understanding what’s going on now?” tweeted Brian Phillips, Cruz’s rapid response director.
